The Truth About Bamboo / Viscose Fabric

Despite aggressive "eco-friendly" marketing, bamboo fabric (sold as bamboo viscose or rayon) undergoes a chemically intensive manufacturing process that is far from green. The raw bamboo plant may be sustainable, but the path to your baby's onesie involves harsh industrial solvents.

The Viscose/Rayon Process breaks down bamboo pulp using carbon disulfide — a toxic solvent linked to neurological damage — and sodium hydroxide (lye). The resulting liquid is then forced through tiny holes to create fibers.

Step 1
Bamboo stalks are chipped and dissolved in sodium hydroxide (lye)
Step 2
Carbon disulfide is added, converting cellulose into soluble xanthate
Step 3
Solution is forced through spinnerets and re-solidified in acid baths
Step 4
Fibers are washed, bleached, and finished — chemical residues may remain
⚠️ The FTC has taken action against companies making false "bamboo" or "eco-friendly" claims. Genuinely greener alternatives include TENCEL™ (lyocell) or GOTS-certified organic cotton.
